MarDella LaRocco Crump Berrett passed away peacefully at the age of 93 surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren on April 25, 2024.  She returned to her heavenly home to be greeted by her loving husband, parents, and siblings.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose life was defined by her selfless service to others.

MarDella was born on February 5, 1931, in Dividend, Utah (Juab County), to Margaretta Werrett and William Raymond LaRocco. Her eldest brother, William Gilbert, had passed before she was born.  MarDella’s family was sealed in the Manti Temple when she was just 2. Tragically, her father died when she was just 5 years old.  Following her father's death, her mother and remaining 4 siblings relocated to Midvale.  MarDella attended Midvale Elementary, Midvale Junior High School, and graduated from Jordan High School in Sandy in 1949.

MarDella possessed a strong work ethic from a young age.  She had to stay busy.  In her early years she had various jobs, including caring for children, neighborhood household cleaning, apple picking, and serving at local establishments like Franz 5 & Dime and Harry's Café.  She took a secretarial course her junior and senior year securing a part-time position at C. Ed. Lewis Reality. MarDella’s professional journey led her through roles at The Midvale Sentinel, the National Advertising Company, and as a substitute secretary at Butler Elementary.

On March 15, 1950, MarDella was married and sealed to Delbert Grant Crump in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together they had four children including a set of twins!  Three girls and one boy.  MarDella did not know she was having twins until 10 days before they were born.  The doctor told her, “MarDella, go home and just double everything you have already prepared.”  The family mainly grew up in Midvale and later MarDella & Delbert moved to East Sandy.  Delbert passed away on January 9, 1984, at the young age of 55. For many years, MarDella worked at the Jordan School District Offices, initially in the Personnel Department (and various others) serving with wonderful leaders.  Even after Delbert’s passing, she continued to work around their mutual friends.  She eventually was hired to the position of personal secretary and office manager to the assistant superintendent of the district — a role she cherished until her retirement in 1995.

Beyond her professional achievements, MarDella was a woman of many talents. She was very social and loved being with people. She organized her class reunions, countless parties, and many trips with her girlfriends and family.  She was an excellent seamstress, a passionate gardener, a skilled decorator, and a dedicated genealogist. Known affectionately as Grandma to all, she was lively, witty, and possessed a spirit and energy that was unmatched. She leaves behind a legacy of meticulously crafted genealogy books for each of her children and grandchildren, full of cherished memories their shared experiences.

On April 26, 1996, she entered married Blaine H. Berrett, brother of her dear friend Janice Berrett Mosher. Together, the two loved serving neighbors, attending social events, and traveling throughout the world with many close friends including Delbert’s brother Sherm and his wife Ardyth.  Grandma said Blaine never said a bad word about her side of the family.  We are thankful for his love and kindness to her and to our family. Blaine’s passed away June 26, 2007.

Grandma’s service extended beyond her family and career; she held various responsibilities at church in the Relief Society, including counselor, teacher, secretary, and four years as Relief Society President. Additionally, she served as primary presidency secretary and Sunday school teacher, leaving an indelible mark on all those she served.

Grandma’s greatest joy in life was her family.  She is survived by her children Karen (Brent-deceased) Bryson, Colleen (Jeff) Clarke, Denise (Kevin) Webb, Douglas Grant (Olga) Crump; twelve grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren; sister, Beth Thornton; brother-in-law, Sherman (Ardyth) Crump, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
